The book is written in an easy-to-read format with a style that allows the reader to initially consume the more salient points of each topic area, followed by a closer-detailed description of each point. Written for all levels and background, the book touches on technical and business related areas providing the reader with an all-round knowledge of WIM.
The book consists of three main technical and business sections respectively:
Technical
• The reader is initially introduced to Instant Messaging (IM), as it is known through desktop computer use (e.g. the "fixed network"). Various fundamental characteristics of IM are discussed, providing a basis of understanding from which to introduce wireless and mobile communications issues.
• Secondly, the reader is introduced to wireless data and the pertinent aspects of its suitability as a carrier or bearer for WIM.
• Finally, IM and wireless/mobile network integration issues are discussed as the reader is taken through the steps of how they work in unison both in the technical and business arena.
Business
• First, the book addresses the business models involved in the WIM ecosystem and value chain
• Next, carrier (mobile network operator) business strategies are addressed, including discussion of critical issues such as business case assessment, branding, and bundling strategies.
• Finally, strategy for introduction and operation of WIM in the enterprise is discussed, including case study analysis and business case assessment.
