Description

A Handful of Rest is the conclusion to the semi-fictionalized tale of the Clover Family which began with the novel, To Handcuff Lightning (also available from CafePress). The Clovers are among the more than five million African-Americans who left the South and migrated north looking for a better life during the years of 1940-1970. Edward and Algie Clover of Dublin, Georgia relocated to Dayton, Ohio in the 1950s. Joining them on that journey was Algie's mother, Chauncey, and their three daughters: Tressie, Viola, and Honey. As the country moves into the turbulent 1960s, Algie must hold her family together as they traverse through the civil rights movement and beyond. That decade would end with a generation redefining itself from Negro to the self-titled, Black American. Against the backdrop of these momentous times, Algie's family, like many others, still contends with love, hate, loss, and salvation. Eventually, each daughter makes a choice, for better or worse, which leaves an impact on the Clover Family that's felt for generations to come.
