Description

Gillett shares vignettes, both hilarious and sobering, of his life in the Navy during WWII and the Korean Police Action. This entertaining book presents a realistic protrait of what really went on in the Navy bases and ships._____ "For those who served in the military, this book nails the experience in touching, sometimes painful, and sometimes humorous echoes of our past. For those who never served, this book accurately portrays the transition of young men from peacetime mid-western quiet life to wartime Pacific Islands in WWII. (JFK even makes an appearance at one point.) This book will ring true for all who have been there." -W. J Dunn _____ Robert Gillett enlisted in the Navy in October 1942 at age 18. He was stationed on New Caledonia and Guadalcanal, participated in the landing on Vella Lavella, and later transferred to Bouganville. He took leave, and was assigned to a Sea Plane Tender (AVP) on duty in the Philippine Islands. The AVP was Overhauled in Bremerton Shipyard, participated in maneuvers at San Diego, and then was assigned to Coco Solo, Panama Canal Zone. Gillett was discharged in January 1946. _____ After graduating from University, he was recalled in September 1950 for the Korean Police Action. He served at the Naval Air Facility, Oppama, Japan until June 1950. After release from the Navy, Gillett continued to work as a Dept of Army Civilian in Japan, Okinawa, and Korea for 36 years.
