The Thin Girl is about desperate men who want to escape their past and to become something new. A Baltimore ex-con tries to reinvent himself as a successful business man in New York. A dying financier attempts to buy himself one step closer to divinity. A young investment banker wants to become somebody, anybody, else. Uniting them is the detective who tracks them all, reeling them inexorably back into their pasts. But this detective stumbles over some long-buried past too, in The Thin Girl. Set in the vibrant and decaying New York of the twenty-first century, when some of the polish is starting to come off a city grown fat with unearned money, the book illuminates the price that is paid to change personal history, whether in a boardinghouse on Greenmount Avenue in East Baltimore, a boardroom high above Manhattan, or in the back rooms of an S&M club. Wherever they are, the characters of the The Thin Girl are tempted by the prospect of an altogether different life.
