Writing in a New Convertible with the Top Down: A Unique Guide for Writers

Like the first edition, but with three new, post-publication chapters, this second edition of Sheila Bender and Christi Killien's book on writing inspires by example. The bulk of it is a series of letters between the two writers, in which they discuss life and writing and how the two overlap; the letters are interspersed with writing exercises that develop from the correspondence. The metaphor of the convertible is an apt one; like a Sunday afternoon drive, this book unfolds in an unhurried manner, with the lessons it offers washing over you like a soft breeze. The letters often sound contrived, cutesy, and overly simplistic, but there are some nice kernels of truth. Additionally, we see how empowering it can be to find a writing partner with whom to discuss the process, the rejection, the loneliness, and the joy.
