She earned her Bachelor's degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and her two Masters degrees along with her doctorate from Columbia University in New York (also where Dr. Ruth trained). During graduate school and a post-doctoral fellowship supported by the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Sonjia studied sex problems, sexually transmitted diseases, and sexual satisfaction. Her early faculty appointments were at New York University and the City University of New York, where she taught human sexuality. In 2003, Dr. Sonjia was recruited to teach at the medical school in the Cayman Islands, an offer she couldn't resist! In 2006, the Journalists for Human Rights organization recognized her series of news-paper interviews with HIV-positive Caribbean women. Currently, Dr. Sonjia writes a weekly sex column for the Miami SunPost, conducts "Sex in South Beach" workshops for adults, and teaches fitness class to improve sexual health. Also a certified fitness instructor, Dr. Sonjia created "Bedroom Body" to strengthen muscles used for sex and prepare the body and mind for sensual satisfaction. Published in academic journals, newspapers, and books, her work has been acknowledged internationally and she's discussed strategies to improve sexual health with President Obama's AIDS czar. The Miami Herald recognized Dr. Sonjia as one of Miami's top 20 leaders under 40 years old and Ford Motor Company has honored Dr. Sonjia as one of 20 Freedom Sisters in South Florida. In her free time, Dr. Sonjia volunteers as an aerobics instructor for homeless women and facilitates sex education workshops for youth in Miami's most disadvantaged communities.
