Ryland Blackinton, Lead Guitarist of Cobra Starship, on Using the iPad to Make Music
Lead Guitarist Ryland Blackinton of Cobra Starship What music app do you use most on your iPad? Probably the Korg iElectribe

What do you use it for?
I have a bunch of basic pattern beats I saved in there. They're good to use on the fly to get an idea down quickly.

How does the iPad fit into your work in the studio and on the road?
I use my iPad for music apps and to look up videos and songs for inspiration. I try not to "surf the web" on the same screen I'm producing on. It can be distracting. Although I play Street Fighter on my iPad, which doesn't help.

What does the iPad offer you musically that wasn't possible/more difficult before?
For me it's most useful on the road when you want to lay something down fast and you don't have any keyboards near you. I have a lot of Korgs at home and the apps have a familiarity to them that I like.

Can you explain an iPad music trick or technique you use often?
Sure! A cool way to utilize the Korg i-ms20 app for iPad is to track a C note on your favorite patch and export it to Logic, or whatever you produce on, and put it on a piano roll to trigger it via MIDI.
