Expenditure.--The following table shows the expenditure for high schools for the year 1882, arranged under the heads shown in General Form 3, as modified by the Education Commission, and the expenditure for 1871-72 under the heads "Provincial" and "Private." Drawn from Provincial, no heading given in modified Form 3. The oost of educating eaeh pupil for 1871-72 has been found by dividing the expenditure by the average daily attendance, as the average number oat the rolls monthly is not known. (a) Includes expenditure from Ses, finoB, endowments, and other sources for Government schools. (6) Ineiudes expenditure ditto ditto ditto in aided and unaided schools. (c) There are no statistics to show how these sums were distributed under the headings given iu the modified Form 3, The figures include all expenditure on high schools, i.e., scholarships, building, and miscellaneous charges. All headings in the revised Form 3 under which no expenditure was incurred have been omitted from the above table. The expenditure under the head "Government institutions," and also the cost of educating each pupil, differ from those shown in the table in paragraph 3, as the expenditure on the Shillong high school, which was reduced to a Government middle school in February, has been included in the above table, though excluded from the table in paragraph 3. Under the head "Scholarships" the amount drawn from local funds for primary scholarships has not been shown, as the district educational officers only gave the grand total for this head, and there are no statistics in this office from which it can be made out how much was drawn for pri...
