Excerpt: For, in the divine order, the relations of the Name and of the Person are so close, that we may generally designate the symbols belonging to both as symbols of persons, or personal symbols: and on the other hand, symbolic Laws and symbolic acts (though these reflect, and are in harmony with, personal attributes and character, and so with personal being) may be both not inaptly classed, in contradistinction to the personal symbols, as symbols of things or as symbolic things. Now it will be found, as might be expected, that personal symbols -- symbolic language that is of which persons and personal character, and even names of persons, are the medium of expression -- are essentially more obscure, require necessarily higher powers for their adequate discernment, than that symbolic language of which things are the expression; and that therefore in each dispensation the latter class of symbols subserve more especially the teaching and edification of those to whom that special dispensation was given ; whilst the former class of personal symbols are rather witnesses to God's wisdom and unity of purpose throughout his whole great economy -- witnesses whose testimony is chiefly addressed to succeeding generations, and specially (lest in these last days faith should wax cold) to ourselves, on whom the latter ends of the world...
