Edward IV.--Notwithstanding that Edward had thns obtained the throne, his position was by no means secure. The Earl of Warwick, who considered that sufficient regard was not paid to his merits, opened negotiations (') with Margaret. She agreed to marry her son, Prince Edward, to Warwick's youngest daughter. The King of France also offered his assistance, and the union against him was so strong, that Edward withdrew to Flanders, and Henry VI. was once more placed on the throne. His power only lasted about six months. Edward left England in October, A.d. 1470, and returned in March, A.d. 1471. His partisans (2) gathered round him. Two great battles were fought, at Barnet, in Hertfordshire, and Tewkesbury, in Gloucestershire. In the former the Earl of Warwick was killed; in the latter Margaret was taken prisoner, and Prince Edward captured and slain. King Henry was found dead in the Tower of London some short time after; Margaret was ransomed (3) by the King of France, and died in retirement at Anjou, and Edward was thus completely established in possession of the throne. 88.
