Excerpt: ...and molten matter disarranges slightly gravitation, and causes those phenomena which we observe in the pendulum, that has created so much interest in its movements. There must also be some law that is acting on the magnetic pole, or variation of the compass; for we find it ever changing in one direction, viz., from east to west. The earliest records we have give the following results: We know that astronomy is one of the exact sciences, and we also know that astronomers have occasion at times to modify in some degree their calculations. And if the polar axis is changing, it might naturally be expected that such changes would be necessary. And what with improved instruments and greater knowledge in cosmography, in time greater results will be obtained, that will throw more light on this movement, particularly since science has arrived at its present high standard. The knowledge thus obtained goes to prove and confirm the foregoing statements and calculations of the altering position of the earth's crust and the earth's axis. And should this law be discovered to be in operation, Physical Geography as a science will be greatly simplified, and many problems cleared up. Some geologists may doubt the foregoing statements, but they must be armed with positive evidence before they can refute that which they have not the means to contravene. Everything in nature is progressive; there is nothing standing still: then why should the axis of the earth be stationary? It is proved that it has shifted, and is shifting.
