Description

Rumination and suppression have been shown to play important roles in depression. Furthermore, they appear to lead to seemingly opposing memory effects, but have never been tested against one and another. The present study was an investigation of the memory effects of both processes, in a side-by-side methodology. Results indicated that while non-dysphoric participants were unaffected by rumination or suppression, dysphoric participants showed an opposite pattern on sequence memory as a result of the writing manipulations. Mood and additional memory measures are also discussed.
