Description

After discussing the challenge that Jose Lezama Lima's work presents for contemporary literary theories, I examine in my dissertation how the paradoxical and baroque writing of Lezama Lima (La Havana 1910-1976) still requires an interpretation to decipher and locate the controversial transcendentalism, the premodern conception, and the peculiar mysticism that grounds his, so called, poetic system. Lezama Lima's impossible attempt to re-enchant the world in a time when metaphysics is considered to be dead is studied with respect to his protocatholic beliefs, his aesthetic of contradictions or aporetic logic, and his return to mythic thought. From the perspective of the "camp" movement, the dissertation further studies Lezama Lima's sense of humor---both metaphysical and mundane---that, without impoverishing it, down-plays his poetic system and influences his ideas on identity, as well as sexual and political issues.
