Description

Individuals with personality disorders are at particular risk of violence toward others (Harris & Rice, 1997; Skeem & Mulvey, 2001; Nestor, 2002). Using archival data on 247 offenders from the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC), this study investigated the utility of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventories, Third Edition (MCMI-III) clinical indicators (Cluster B -- NPD, BPD, and APD) and intake need codes/anger and sexual in identifying and predicting institutional violence. Results did show statistical significance between an offender with borderline and antisocial personality traits and one with assaultive behaviors during incarceration. Additionally, there was statistical significance between an offender with borderline personality traits and one that displayed fighting behaviors. Conversely, the relationship between narcissistic personality and institutional violence was not significant. Implications and future research are discussed.
