The Republic of Salvador is situated between 18° 12' and 14° 28' north lati tude, and 87° 87' and 90° 6' longitude, west of the meridian of Greenwich. In form it is rectangular. Seventy-nine miles is the average mean breadth, while the whole State is one hundred and ninety miles long, and contains square miles, or is slightly smaller than New Jersey.

One hundred and thirty-nine miles is the extreme length of the Pacific coast line; Salvador possesses none on the Atlantic.
