In these respects I have been led into greater detail than was originally intended; but it is hoped that the practical utility of the present publication will be thereby increased. In referring to the authorities, I have made the distinction, which it is now usual to adopt, between decisions and dicta, by citing the name of the case in the one instance, and the page of the report in the other. I have also deemed it expedient to render the index more copious and precise. His Lordship has made some few additions and alterations in the text, but I have not been instrumental in withdrawing from the Profession any part of the work itself.
