Excerpt from Compend of Mechanical Refrigeration and Engineering: A Comprehensive Digest of General Engineering and Thermodynamics for the Practical Use of Ice Manufacturers, Cold Storage Men, Contractors, Engineers, Brewers, Packers, and All Other Users of Refrigeration in the Various Industries, Also Students of Refri
Owing to the haste with which a new edition of the compend was required, the seventh edition having been so rapidly exhausted, excepting a number of corrections, but few changes have been made in the main body of the eighth edition of this book; but important new matter has been added in an appendix which embodies the results of the more recent investigations of the author with reference to the thermodynamics of vapors and their rational application in refrigeration and general energetics.
These results are presented in the form of an appendix chiefly because of their signal variance with several of the thermodynamic concepts of the present day, wherefore it was not deemed expedient to amalgamate these, in some respects discordant, matters at this juncture.
Generally speaking, the variance of these concepts is brought about by the fact that the rate of energy conversion which forms the basis of thermodynamic doctrines is erroneously accorded a general applicability, while actually its applicability in its present form is limited. This error and its consequences forms the main subject of the appendix which is subdivided into four chapters.
In the first chapter it is shown that the rates of energy conversion and its corollaries, the thermodynamic function and the second law of thermodynamics, are, in their present formulation, of a purely pneumodynamic character, applicable only to discussion of energy conversions with permanent gases, and not to such as are mediated by vapors and other media preferably used in Industrial energy conversions.
Accordingly the author originates a new purely thermodynamic rate of conversion and corresponding expressions for the thermodynamic function and second law of thermodynamics which are found to be of universal applicability to energy conversion with different media and in different states of aggregation.
