"Dark Lady of the Sonnets" was more than just a fundraiser for the national theatre when it was written in 1910. Shaw had a grudging and deep respect for William Shakespeare, who Shaw believed was every bit as good a dramatists as himself. He tells us "(you) will find that trivial as this little play of mine is, its sketch of Shakespeare is more complete than its levity suggests."
