When we consider the Cretans and the Hittites, the powers of Babylonia and Assyria, and the internal conditions in Syria and Palestine, it can hardly be doubted that the reign of Akhetaten marks a turning point, notably in Egyptian history, but also in the wider history of the ancient world. The author reproduces this age, to show the intensely human interest that lies in the story of religion and art, of decadence and reform, of hectic policies and subtle intrigues, of widespread social and political unrest, and of movement leading to permanent social and political changes.
