Rosie Kelly and Ellen Kerry are fledgling detectives. Their first minor job is tracking down the lover of philanderer A.F. Beaudelaire. Mrs. Beaudelaire suspects the lover will possibly be a guest at a large house party she is giving for the Save-Our-Strays Society. It becomes serious when the lover is discovered dead in a closet of the mansion, stripped clean of all her jewels. Cases of murder and mayhem bring Ellen and Rosie more business and notoriety than they dreamed of. The Polskis, Jewish Holocaust survivors, ask them to track a former Nazi prison guard, who occasionally comes into their deli downstairs from the detective agency. Finally, a long-disputed adoption case is resolved, and more and more money and cases keep their new business afloat.
