Description

Between East and West: My Life with Olivia is a two-volume memoir about a family living in various cultures and different regimes in turbulent times. Married in New York City in 1950, the author and his wife went back to work in a “New China,” finding his father was in a Communist prison. Enduring numerous suppressive campaigns, they survived the great famine created by the Communist regime in the late 1950s. Through the aid of his wife’s family in Singapore, they finally escaped out of Mainland China and immigrated back to the United States in the 1960s. In this first volume, Between East and West: My Life with Olivia, Volume I — In and Out of China, the author testifies to his family’s ordeal under the Communist regime. In the soon-to-be-released Volume II, Melting Pot and Salad Bar, he will describe how his family lived in the United States in the ever-evolving “Melting Pot” and the colorful “Salad Bar.”
