Description ▲
Janie Baker was raised Catholic until she left the church while attending a Catholic college. She began a career as a neuroscientist when she was afflicted with bipolar disorder (manic-depression). Her case was particularly severe, and resulted in religious psychosis, during which she moved to Calcutta, India, and worked with Mother Teresa. Following a number of years of hallucinations and delusions, shock treatments returned her to health. Restored to sanity, Janie eventually underwent a compelling conversion and returned to the church. She writes here an intimate and riveting story of her struggles growing up, dealing with religion, and her descent into bipolar madness.
