War and Peace

Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace (1865-69), an epic novel considered one of his masterpieces, is set in the backdrop of the Napoleonic invasion of Russia.The novel depicts Russian society at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Focusing on five aristocratic families, the novel presents Tolstoy's view that the events that shape history are inevitable and that the course of history cannot be altered by individuals.
