Sam Houston lived a unique and exciting life. He was the only person to be president of a republic, a United States senator, and the governor of two different states. Houston was a leader in winning Texas its independence from Mexico in the Texas Revolution. As president of the Republic of Texas, however, he knew Mexico would try to regain control of Texas. Houston led the movement that resulted in Texas becoming part of the United States, securing the states future.
