This is the story of the 1960 season, day by day, as chronicled in Pittsburgh's two daily papers, the Press and the Post-Gazette, and in the weekly Pittsburgh Courier, along with the observations of many of the participating players and of a 12-year-old fan: the author. He was able to see 18 games that summer in the company of his grandfather, Mike Cushing, who was the usher in the Pirates' front office at Forbes Field.
This book is a labor of love. Pap-pap Cushing worked for the Pirates for 40 years, took Rick to countless games, and told him stories about past Pirates greats, specifically Honus Wagner. His maternal grandfather, Red Malone, also figures into the story. He, too, was a lifelong Pirates fan and told him stories about the team.
The final chapter -- titled ''Where Are They Now?'' -- brings up to date all the principle characters on the 1960 Pirates.
