This volume contains the substance of a course of five Lectures which I delivered last October, at the London School of Economics, on the Influence of Religious Conceptions upon the Historical Development of Economic Doctrines and Theories. I have been conscious throughout of my indebtedness to the erudite and suggestive work of Dr.T roeltsch, entitled Die Soziallehren der christlichen Kirchen und Grupfen. For the present I have endeavoured to concentrate attention on the history of Thought, but I hope to supplement the discussion at another time by dealing with the part played by Christianity in helping to form the modern conception of Social Duty.
