THROUGH our city streets pass and repass vehicles of all sorts, each bearing a license number, conspicuously displayed. As these numbers are all recorded at the place where each vehicle is owned, they furnish an easy means of identifying the individual vehicles.
The people that pass in a double current upon cither side of this stream of traffic are not thus registered; they bear no identification number, and have a place in the commonwealth simply by virtue of a personal name, recorded at the time of birth, and held simply in the memory of the individual himself and of his personal acquaintances.
