The Blue Hills Grow Tender

Smoky and Rebecca (of Amish heritage) grow up together in the Reynolds’ household. Rebecca (when fifteen) makes her first visit to Amish country and the home of her deceased mother, “the land of contrasts and contradictions,” with its people set apart. Later she also visits her late father’s parents who are well-known and well-to-do citizens of a large metropolitan city. Hating the separation, Smoky encourages her to go. He loves her dearly and knows that she might decide to stay in the city and not return to become his wife.
