This is the sequel to Beyond the Mists and stands alone. It follows the Ashbourne family in the Ducal English estate, Sylverthorpe, and is again narrated by six more family members who further the story, though Laura is the only one of the original six in Beyond the Mists narrating here. Though brought up as believers, we see many of the family going their own way, bringing, along with much joy, also trials and tragedy upon themselves and many innocent others. Laura desperately schemes to forestall an unspeakable situation; Charles, whose heart becomes cold as ice as a child, as a man is concerned with only his own wants and needs.
