Head Lice and Hot Tamales (Volume 1)

Getting head lice can be pretty creepy! That is exactly what happens to Jean when she goes with her grandmother to deliver a baby. On Jean's eleventh birthday, her father is injured in an accident, and the family is forced to move in with her grandparents. Jean and her two sisters must share a room with a spoiled aunt who is just a few years older than them. She learns how much excitement a snake in an outhouse can cause, and she grows to appreciate her family, even when they aren't always loveable. Set during the Great Depression, Head Lice and Hot Tamales deals with many of the same things kids today must face, such as living with an alcoholic parent, divorce, and financial worry.
