The Elmo Drum and Song Book comes with an attached toy drum and two drumsticks, and a six-button audio module. Children press the buttons to hear 10 songs and drum along to music inspired by Elmo, Grover, Big Bird, and other Sesame Street characters. They also can follow the song lyrics on the book's pages. The book is designed for children ages 18 months and older.
To play a song, children find the button on the audio module that matches an icon in the book. When they press the button, the song plays and a LED display lights up the drum to the rhythm of the music. Children tap the drum while a song is playing to add their own beats to the music and light show, and they also can turn off the music and tap the drum to hear the sounds of a snare drum, cowbell, tambourine, and woodblock.

The book's coated board pages resist wear and tear. The Elmo Drum and Song Book conforms to the specifications for toy safety of ASTM F963-08. Three replaceable AAA batteries that power the sound module are included.
