At a time when the study of the Law has become so popular in this country as to be regarded by some as a desirable branch of general knowledge and education, while the many pursue it with the object of practising an honorable profession, any endeavor to assist the student, however slightly, in his most difficult task, cannot be regarded as a superfluous attempt; particularly so, when the necessity for such an attempt arises from the absence of an appropriate work, enunciating the very fundamental principles upon which the whole science of law is based. No doubt there are many valuable works on the subject of legal maxims in general; but certainly none of them is particularly designed to supply the desideratum felt in India; for there is no book that I am aware of, which illustrates our Legal Maxims with special reference to the Laws now in force in this country. This is a consideration which has induced me to take up a work, which, in its scope at all events, is calculated to impress upon the minds of Indian students of law, the grand principles of our system of jurisprudence, and thereby to facilitate their labours in understanding the law in all its various branches, together with the reason, which in fact is the soul, of the law.
