Donnie Hollimon started writing in a journal when her triplet brother was diagnosed with cancer. This was a way to express thoughts, feelings and remember conversations with Ronnie during this time. She also wrote some poems as a way to put on paper what she was feeling. In moving through the grief process, after Ronnie died, she decided to keep a promise she made to Ronnie. He wanted his family to move on, try to be happy, and make positive contributions.
Donnie began writing stories about growing up as a baby boomer, and about other roads she has traveled. This would be a way to pull up memories of good and happy times and something that would help in healing her heart.
"Most of the stories are very funny but a couple of them were tough to write," Donnie said. "I hope that people enjoy the book and they find themselves smiling or laughing, and also being touched deeply by a couple of the stories."
The book starts with being born a triplet in the small town of Picayune, Mississippi. Donnie also writes about, growing up in Luling, Louisiana, her grandparents, time in the Navy, and stories on reflecting. Donnie learned that humor is something we can all use to help us deal with heartache, and with daily life. "Having a sense of humor can carry us over the bumps in the road on the journey of life."
Being an avid reader, Donnie started reading at a young age and enjoyed the simple stories that Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote about her life. Writers whose works have influenced her would be Lewis Grizzard, Erma Bombeck, and Celestine Sibley.
