The comical and insightful Shakespearean play has long been a subject of controversy, often relating to a feminist view of the play in general, and Katherina's final speech in particular, as offensively misogynistic and patriarchal. Others have defended the play by highlighting the Induction as evidence that the play's sentiments are not meant to be taken at face value, that the entire play is, in fact, a farce.
