Great herds of reindeer, bison and horse, often numbering in their hundreds of thousands, and mammoth, aurochs and wooly rhinoceros, thrived by either following the brief summers in mass migrations, or merely moving between mountain-slope and valley, or forest and tundra. Cro-Magnon man was a child of violence and bloodshed, having evolved by a process of attrition in his island home. Premeditated and organized killing of his own kind had forged him into a species that could challenge and upset even Mother Nature’s system of checks and balances.
