Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems are part of the 21st century medical system. EMRs collect patient data, communicate with other provider’s medical systems, send prescription and lab requests, and store and transmit images and medical documents. Patient files, chart documents, and bills are sent to and received from other medical facilities. These complex applications also can interconnect with sensors and other medical devices within hospitals and clinics. Due to the sheer value of patient data, medical network and EMR security must be a priority for all providers and staff. The 21st century has brought humanity a level of health technology never before seen. At the same time, the skills of cyber-criminals are becoming boggling. Security is the utmost imperative with modern technology, but the medical field may just be awakening to this new reality.
