It’s been five years since the deadly anthrax attacks and all the evidence doesn’t amount to more than a hill of spores. The FBI is being sued for persecuting the wrong man and they are about to do it again. Epidemiologist Mackey Dunn has arrived in NYC but is unable to start his new job with the health department’s disease detectives due to a hiring freeze. Immobility provokes Dunn’s demons and spins songs from a mental jukebox that remind him of his wife’s suicide. To distract him from his past he immerses himself in the thousands of documents amassed during the anthrax investigation but doesn’t make headway until he convinces FBI agent Charo Chen to join him. Despite her reverence for FBI protocol, Chen agrees to assist Dunn to save the bureau from further embarrassment and restore her own tarnished reputation. Dunn and Chen trace the trail of spores from New York to Kazakhstan to Washington in this fast-paced medical mystery.
