Why the number 10? We live in a base ten world. If your children know the number bonds that make 10, they will more than likely have an easier time adding and subtracting as the numbers get larger. "Number bonds" or "fact families" are key to many math curricula and mental math strategies. My 6-year old (who is very mathematically oriented) has taken to number bonds like a fish to water, without much drilling. But every child is different, so this is what I came up with my very visual 4-year old.
