Freud on Culture, Ethics, Religion: An annotated translation of and commentary on Das Unbehagen in der Kultur ‘Unhappiness in Culture’

This work presents a new translation of Freud's major work on culture. The translation is based closely on the German text and avoids the neologisms and sentence-structure changes of the previous English translations. The author suggests that there are 'wisdom' motifs in the work and that these sit oddly with doctrinal psychoanalysis. Freud's views on religion and his unsystematic comments on 'ethics' is examined as well as Freud's relation to and views on women; and his complex, but also quite simple, relationship to Judaism.
