Call it a primordial connection, call it my Highlander heritage, call it Jungian racial memory, but the minute I saw the mountains of the West, I knew I’d finally returned home. I forgot about the MFA and being literary, transferred to an MA program with a concentration in rhetoric, and started writing about mountain wilderness, especially after reading Nash’s Wilderness the American Mind. Here, then, please find my comment on mountain wilderness and the freedom I found there that I never found in the flatlands of civilization. I found no companion as companionable as mountain solitude.
