The author, George Leonard Cheesman concentrates on the period roughly from the time of Augustus to Marcus Aurelius when Rome was at the peak of her power. G. L. Cheesman (1884-1915) was a historian and Fellow of New College, Oxford. Serving as a Lieutenant in the First World War, he was killed at Gallipoli. His papers are now in the Bodleian Library.
