In The Poet and The Maestro, Taggart draws upon elements of actual criminal cases, international acts of espionage and terrorism to weave this complex story of an international intrigue. He introduces the readers to a former soviet spy and devoted communist known to authorities as Kirill Petrov. Recent events have caused Petrov to believe that his most dangerous ongoing terrorist conspiracy may be compromised by a former associate, a Polish national named Stanley Adamski who has been inspired by The Solidarity Movement and the new found democracy in Poland to abandon his communist associates. Petrov has learned that Adamski has gone to America and that he is attempting to communicate with an extremely dangerous, self-appointed American, anticommunist known only as The Poet.
Until now both Petrov and The Poet have been working secretly behind the scenes, throughout the Middle East, Europe and America with the tacit approval of their governments to carry on their own private continuation of the cold war. Their activities have been part of a worldwide conspiracy driven by secret agendas of governmental cover stories and lies that permit them to continue their treachery. Now,  Petrov must come to America to direct his chief of operations in this country, The Maestro to identify, locate and kill both Adamski and The Poet.
When Adamski visits F.B.I. Headquarters in N.Y.C. the gravity of what he knows is underestimated and a rookie F.B.I. agent, Michelle Thompson is assigned to investigate Adamski's claims. Her investigation threatens to expose the entire conspiracy. Now Petrov and some of the most dangerous people in the world will do what they must to stop her learning the truth.
