A New Beginning: A story of escape from persecution

In 1673 the Marrano parents of four year old Afonso Alvares are arrested and executed by the Portuguese Inquisition Office for observing their Jewish religion. This has a profound effect on the young Afonso which will determine his future. In 1694, with no abatement in the persecution of the conversos, Afonso, together with his close friend Gabriel DaCosta, decides to make a fresh start in a new land with religious tolerance. England or the Netherlands are their preferred choice. However, departure from Portugal is dangerous, as the authorities closely monitor the movements and activities of all New Christians. The story tracks the pair's journey through Portugal and the dangers they encounter en route in their bid to depart the country.
