Yes, there are assassinations, money-laundering scandal, murder, kidnapping and a last-page cliffhanger (sequel maybe?). This book is sure to irritate conservative Catholics and Right-to-Lifers. Maybe the Pope will condemn it (guaranteed sales booster). THE AMERICAN POPE is a serious book – maybe it will give ideas to those beleaguered nuns and divorced/shunned Catholics…though the tongue-in-cheek humor of Lawrence Block is born again in this novel.
