When Beethoven died he left work in progress. Unable to rest, he returns to the future to complete his Tenth Symphony. Always preferring to work in the peace of the countryside, he chooses a remote village in the Lake District, inflicting himself upon the orderly household of Vivian and Ted Tyson in order to finish what was left unfinished. Noisy, disruptive and not always visible, he turns their lives and those of their friends upside down, and annoys and intrigues the neighbours by turn. He ends up claiming Social Security, he acquires a grand piano in a less-than regular manner, rides a motorbike and even finds time to have an affair with Vivian’s best friend Min. He succeeds in completing the work, but straight away disappears, leaving it for the unfortunate Vivian to launch upon an unsuspecting world. She now has to contend with orchestras, conductors and the Press … However, one by one his latter-day supporters come to Vivian’s aid to make sure the symphony has a wider public. There is a bit of agony, a lot of laughter and many, many legs are pulled along the way.
