Description

I wrote this book in 1973-1974 during a sabbatical to England to study popular culture. It is an ethno-semiotic analysis of certain aspects of English culture that attracted my attention and interest. It deals with topics such as English character and culture, Wimpy's hamburgers, the daily calendars of middle-class English men and women, shopping, the Queen's guard, wrestling on the telly, 'Til Death Do Us Part, a visit to Sussex University and Cambridge University, English attitudes (based on data from the Gallup Polls in Britain, a conference I attended at Norwich University on popular culture, and many other topics. It is an interpretation of English culture and character, informed by semiotic, Marxist and psychoanalytic theory and represents my understanding of English culture and society in 1973-1974, when the book was written.
