Description

Orthopetalia is the action with which a cyclist stands up while pedaling, eg when she/he has to climb a steep climb. This book is an enjoyable journey, sometimes touching and others humorous, in Greece of the last seventy years. George Roukas gives us his autobiography in his own realistic way. The narration is taking us through the picturesque lanes of many Greek cities that decisively influenced his wheel of life from birth to maturity. His great landmarks, among many, are Volos, Nigrita, Drama, Serres, Thessaloniki and Athens, as these beloved Greek places shaped his dreams, choices, memories and ultimately the purpose of his life. The reference in those years is like a tribute to Greek tradition, a reminiscence of lifestyle, manners and customs of the past. The narration is going through school years, behaviors, attitudes of teachers, education in general, platonic romances, the economic, political, agricultural life of those days and the Greek way of life in general. Through the pages of this interesting book are emerging memories which have their vivid mark on all of us. At the same time, George Roukas, in his own personal way, is trying to protest on the current affairs that haunt his country. All references in views and positions of distinguished personalities (professors, writers, authors, artists, etc.) are given in order to strengthen the memory and aims of the protest. The content of the book includes strictly, biographical information and a recollection of rare personal photos of the author.
