The Black Hills: A History in Photographs

About five million people visit the Black Hills every year, touring Mount Rushmore and Devil's Tower and taking part in the Sturgis motorcycle rally. Native Americans have settled here for more than 9,000 years, and European settlement began when George Custer's expedition found gold in the Hills in 1874. Photographers such as John Grabill and the curators of the Library of Congress have made possible this illustrated and dramatic history of the first sixty years of settlement, from Custer to the Great Depression. Gunfighters and gold are juxtaposed with the epic story of the Lakota and Cheyenne as east met west in the astonishing story of the Black Hills.
