Description

This book was selected as "Top 10 book about Russia published in 2013" (see http://www.russia-direct.org/content/top-10-books-about-russia-published-2013) BOOK REVIEW: In 2013 Edward Snowden became almost as popular as a rock star. As he reached the Sheremyetevo airport in Moscow, many experts wondered whether his stay in Russia would affect Russian-American relations was mentioned negatively. This book, however, focuses on another issue, though related directly to Snowden’s decision to stay in Russia. Chinese expert Luc Changlei Guo analyzes in detail the policy of the United States, Russia and China towards war criminals and considers, in this regard, the prospects of the former NSA employee. The book is particularly interesting in that it discusses the events from an “Eastern perspective” and analyses them in light of Eastern values - often radically different from Western ones. —Anastasia Borik, RUSSIA-DIRECT.ORG http://www.russia-direct.org/content/top-10-books-about-russia-published-2013 BRIEF INTRODUCTION Edward Snowden, a former officer of a US spy agency, revealed the PRISM project to media. Snowden released top-secret documents which include the details of a huge project engaged in gathering information of the individuals. On the one hand, the US government used its influence to collect the private information of citizens, which aims to protect national security; on the other hand, an intelligence officer divulged highly-confidential documents, which aims to defend the right of people. This sensitive incident quickly spread to all over the world. The US government acquiesced in the fait accompli, and declared that they would take actions under the American laws. A government has a lot of means to deal with its citizens, but what the US government did is to tacit declaration and to deal with the incident in accordance with laws.
