Intertidal invertebrates and algal communities provide an important source of primary production and are an important conduit of energy, nutrients, and pollutants between terrestrial and marine environments. Intertidal plants and animals are harvested and provide resources for subsistence, sport, and commercial harvests. The intertidal zone is also important as a site of recreational activities such as camping, fishing, and hiking.
